From museums to shopping malls, theaters to theme restaurants, farms to memorials, Albany offers days and nights filled with a wide variety of places for people of all ages to experience and enjoy. Make time to visit some of Albany's non-traditional tourist sites, too. Attractions extend from downtown to many places worth-the-drive from wherever you are. Please click on any of the links on the left sidebar for useful information while here in Albany! On Saturday, July 3rd, please stay for our downtown music festival - Pearlapolooza! North Pearl Street will be shut down between Pine St. and Sheridan Avenue, from Noon - 9pm for this family, non-alcoholic event, and will include craft/art vendors, carnival games, carnival rides and local music.
The City of Albany, the Times Union Center, and the Albany hospitality community welcome you to the 2010 AAU Karate Nationals. As a team, the AAU and AC-TKO will receive credit back to their association by having competitors and their families staying in the designated host and overflow hotels.  Please be supportive of their efforts and your athletes.  Thank you!

Dear Athletes:

Congratulations on qualifying for this very prestigious championship. It is my pleasure to welcome you and your families to the Amateur Athletic Union's 2010 Karate Nationals being held at the Times Union Center in Albany, New York.

Albany is in the heart of New York State and we are a family-friendly city. Having previously hosted several high-profile sporting tournaments, we know what it takes to insure all of you have an exhilarating experience and truly enjoy our region. New York's Capital is a dynamic city steeped in dutch history, culture, urban sophistication and sports! The Capital Region is an energetic environment where today's excellence harmonizes with cherished emblems of yesterday.

As President of the Albany County Convention & Visitors Bureau, I invite you to share our vitality and take advantage of all that Albany and the Capital Region has to offer. A short drive west of Albany is Cooperstown, New York. Cooperstown is home to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, Fenimore Art Museum, and The Farmer's Museum. North of Albany in the Lake George and Adirondack Mountain region is outlet shopping, boat cruises, horseback riding, and The Great Escape/Splashwater Kingdom, a Six Flags Amusement Park. South of Albany in the Hudson Valley Region and Catskills, you can visit the West Point Military Academy, sample the cuisine at the Culinary Institute of America, and tour President's homes. A little further south of the Hudson Valley Region is New York City!

A short walk from the Crowne Plaza and central to downtown Albany is the contemporary design of the Empire State Plaza, completed as a vision of Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller in 1978. The Plaza was built not only to serve as government offices, but as a center of arts, culture and community activity. The New York State Museum (the largest State Museum in the country), the Empire State Art Collection, and the Empire State Performing Arts Center (known as The Egg for its unusual and distinctive design) are all contained at the Plaza. On July 4th there will be a celebration at the Empire State Plaza which will include food, music, and vendors that will culminate with a spectacular fireworks display.

Thank you for choosing to come to our wonderful city. If there is anything we can do while you are here, we are only a telephone call away at 518-434-1217 or 800-258-3582. Good luck to all of you!

Sincerely,

Michele Vennard
